TYPES OF DIABETES

Alström Syndrome

Alström Syndrome is a rare, inherited genetic disorder with a variety of features affecting different parts of the body. Though uncommon worldwide, Alström Syndrome can cause significant health challenges for those affected. It often leads to complications like vision and hearing loss, heart problems, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and kidney failure.

Key Features of Alström Syndrome

Retinal Degeneration

The first noticeable symptom is usually vision problems in young children, leading to gradual vision loss and sometimes blindness.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss often develops before the age of 10, varying in severity.

Cardiomyopathy

This condition weakens the heart's ability to pump effectively. While it can improve, it may recur later in life.

Kidney Failure

Alström Syndrome can lead to kidney problems, which may be acute or chronic, contributing to kidney failure over time.

Obesity risk factor

Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes

Children with Alström Syndrome tend to gain weight more easily, especially during early life, leading to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Bone and Joint Issues

Conditions like arthritis, short stature, and spinal issues can also affect individuals with Alström Syndrome.

Managing Alström Syndrome

While there is no cure for Alström Syndrome, many of its symptoms and complications can be managed with proper care. Some treatment strategies include:

  • Vision and Hearing: Wearing dark glasses can help with sensitivity to light and may slow down vision loss, while hearing aids can help manage hearing difficulties.
  • Cardiomyopathy: Medications such as digoxin and ACE inhibitors may be prescribed to support heart function.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Managing diabetes with a healthy diet, physical activity, and medications like metformin or insulin can help control blood sugar levels.
  • Kidney Failure: Treatment depends on the severity of kidney issues, and options include dialysis or kidney transplants if necessary.
  • Bone and Joint Health: Regular physical activity, stretching exercises, and massage can help reduce discomfort caused by bone and joint problems.

How Rare is Alström Syndrome?

Alström Syndrome is extremely rare, with only about 700 cases diagnosed globally. In Kenya, as elsewhere, the syndrome may be underdiagnosed due to its rarity. Genetic testing can confirm the diagnosis if symptoms are present, as both parents must carry the recessive gene for a child to inherit the condition.
