Diabetes and Malnutrition: A Key Focus at Cliniquest Research
At Cliniquest Research, we are committed to addressing the intersection of diabetes and malnutrition, particularly within underserved communities such as Kibera in Nairobi. Diabetes and malnutrition are both significant public health challenges in Kenya, and their co-occurrence creates unique clinical and research challenges. Our research seeks to understand the complex relationship between diabetes and malnutrition, with the goal of improving care for individuals affected by both conditions.
Why Diabetes and Malnutrition?
In Kenya, the rise of diabetes has been accompanied by persistent issues of malnutrition, especially in low-income areas. Malnutrition, whether in the form of undernutrition or obesity, complicates diabetes management and can exacerbate the risk of complications. Poor nutrition can make it harder for people with diabetes to manage their blood sugar levels, leading to higher rates of diabetic complications such as cardiovascular diseases, neuropathy, and kidney problems.
By focusing on this area, Cliniquest Research aims to fill gaps in the existing healthcare framework, targeting vulnerable populations who are most affected by both diabetes and food insecurity.
Our Research Capabilities
At Cliniquest, we leverage our robust research infrastructure and partnerships to conduct impactful studies on diabetes and malnutrition. We have access to advanced medical facilities at St. Mary’s Mission Hospital, where our team of experienced researchers, healthcare professionals, and dietitians work together to study the interaction between malnutrition and diabetes. Our comprehensive recruitment and retention strategies ensure we engage with a diverse population, enabling us to gather meaningful data from a wide spectrum of participants in both rural and urban settings.
Through collaboration with regulatory bodies such as AMREF and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, we ensure that our studies are conducted ethically and comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
This commitment to ethical research allows us to contribute to the understanding and prevention of diabetes complications, particularly in malnourished populations.
Areas of Interest in Diabetes and Malnutrition Research
Nutritional Interventions for Diabetes Management
Investigating how nutritional support programs can help manage diabetes more effectively in malnourished populations, and exploring dietary solutions tailored to low-income communities.
Impact of Undernutrition on Glycemic Control
Examining how undernutrition affects blood sugar regulation and the progression of diabetes, especially in children and adolescents.
Dual Burden of Malnutrition (Obesity and Undernutrition)
Researching the coexistence of undernutrition and obesity in the same populations and its effects on diabetes management and complications.
Health Outcomes in Malnourished Diabetic Patients
Studying the long-term health outcomes and complications in diabetic patients who are also malnourished, with a focus on identifying effective intervention strategies.
Conclusion
At Cliniquest Research, we are dedicated to improving the lives of people living with diabetes and malnutrition through innovative research and clinical trials. By addressing the challenges unique to Kenya’s underserved communities, we aim to make a meaningful impact on public health and provide sustainable solutions for the management of these conditions.
